The insider's scoop on food, travel & southern culture
She introduced us to French cuisine, and showed us that we could achieve it. She made us laugh, and taught us not to cry if something went wrong. Julia Child was that rare creature of rarified talent and refined skill who also possessed deep reserves of jollity, generosity, and humanity. She was born one hundred and one years ago, come August 15, 2013.
In honor Julia’s legacy, from Tuesday, August 6 to Saturday, August 17, 2013, executive chef Chris Jakubiec will be presenting a special Julia Child Birthday Tasting Menu at Plume in The Jefferson, DC. The six-course prix fixe tasting menu features dishes carefully selected from among Julia Child’s globally recognized and renowned cookbooks: Stuffed Heirloom Tomato Provencal and Pâté de Campagne to start; entrées of Fillet of Dover Sole Meuniere and Boeuf Bourguignon; and a sweet finale of Crêpes Suzette with Candied Orange Zest and Grand Marnier – all in a salute to the recipes of Julia’s sophisticated talent and technique for $115 per person*.
Devoted to the classic old-world techniques of his European training, Full Circle Chef Robert Wiedmaier, along with Marcel’s chef de cuisine Paul Stearman will channel Julia’s favorite by featuring a Whole Roasted Tarragon Chicken for Two. In honor of her birthday on Thursday, August 15, Wiedmaier’s haute French flagship will offer the infamous Poulet Poêlé à L’estragon with sides that include Asparagus in Simmered Onions, Butter Braised Carrots, Madeira Mushrooms, and Gratin Daphinoise for $85*.
As the guest of honor would say, “Bon Appétit!”
